For Turntablists:

Serato will give you the best vinyl simulation, with lowest latency (good thing). That is the whole focus of Serato Scratch Live. A solid, reliable, low latency audio interface is part of the package with Serato, and that is a good thing for turntablist. If you are a turntablist looking for a digital solution, don’t waste your time anywhere else.

For the mix DJ that wants solid timecoded vinyl control as well:

Torq. Torq has a strong focus on time coded vinyl control, also has a dedicated low latency audio interface, but also has features for the more digital mix DJ. Torq can also be controlled by the M-Audio X-Session Pro, or the M-Audio Xponent midi controller, for those who want a more compact solution, without timecoded CD’s or Vinyl. Torq is relatively new on the scene, and does not have the long background of Serato.

For those that want more flexibility, and the most features:

Virtual DJ, and other similiar programs, like Tracktor, DJ Decks, PCDJ, and the list goes on. With these programs, you are responsible for picking out an audio interface, and getting it to work reliably with your computer hardware. This will take more work. On the upside, you can choose from a LONG list of midi controllers, and have a lot of features. You will have a harder time getting time coded vinyl to work, but it can be done.

If you are an MC, and you want your computer to mix for you. You want complete automation:
OtsAV. Currently no midi control ability at all, no time code ability. This really is for the MC that want’s his hands free. OtsAV is very reliable, with good sound quality. It’s good at what it does, which is automation.

    What do you mean …
What do you mean how do you get turntables? Turntables are available nearly everywhere, and all over the place online. Use google. Go to djforums and ask what turntablists recommend for the price that you can afford.

  4. sleeperawaken36 Says:

    You need to do …
You need to do research, which means using google, and reading a lot, before just downloading something. Serato scratch, as I mentioned in the video, requires Rane hardware to operate, either a SL1 or SL3 audio interface, or a special Rane mixer, I think it’s the 57.

    I know that Serato …
I know that Serato is the most tried program out there, but Torq is looking good as well, and does have the effects. However, you could also look into using a mixer with built in effects, so that you would not need to depend on software effects. As far as latency, I really don’t know if there is a difference, you’d need to research that. So either is a good choice, really.

    correction. Traktor …
correction. Traktor Scratch has the best timecode, and may even be better than serato when it comes to the mix DJ. Traktor uses 2000 hertz timecode while serato uses 1000

    Torq for me. …
Torq for me. everyone’s waving the Serato falg and says that”oh its perfect fpr turntableists because of its superior latency responce, blah blah” whatever. I’m not a turntablist. But Torq can be used just as well….just check out the other Youtube vids of pro Turntablists scratching and cutting and giving props to Torq.

Serato has been around the longest, and its more expensive because thats the only option there was for Dj’s , but now you can choose from a varied selection.

  17. daveekronyk Says:

    i have with serato …
i have with serato is there controller box is big and bulky, has 2 ins 2 outs and 2 thru’s, while torq’s conectiv is nice and compact with only 2 ins and 2 outs, less confusion, mess, and space. if ur playin a gig, nothing is werse than changing the usb boxes in and out as they are not compatible with each other..

  18. daveekronyk Says:

    in my opinion …
in my opinion serato is more stable, but it has been around longer with driver improvements, but, torq being newer is not as stable, but with each and every driver update it improves significantly, torq has a onboard recording option, rewire, vst plugins, and the x-ponent which i love and the trigger finger.torq is cheaper to buy, way more options, and i believe will be on par with serato’s stability in very soon, one issue

So i guess the real …
So i guess the real answer to the question “Which DJ software to choose?” is “It depends on what kind of DJ you are?”….for my kind of mobile DJing then Ots is easiest and best but for those who like scratching and mixing, then VirtualDJ, Torq, or Traktor would probably be best.

  21. sleeperawaken36 Says:

    For me, OtsAV was …
For me, OtsAV was way to constricting, and programs like VirtualDJ, Torq, or Traktor are far better options for me.

  22. sleeperawaken36 Says:

    Unless, you want to …
Unless, you want to: scratch, or loop, or add samples, or use time coded vinyl, or use sound effects, pr have midi compatibility with a large variety of controllers…etc… Sorry, but I really don’t like blind statements like that, especially when they could not be farther from the truth. OtsAV is a good program, but it has it’s strengths and weaknesses, like other programs. It’s strength is automation, it’s particularly good for MC’s. It’s weakness is for the serious mix DJ.

    Tractor and Ableton …
Tractor and Ableton Live are the only programs that have 4 band EQs (with Ableton you can set up as many EQ as you want to). I don’t use Tractor anymore because it gave me a lot of problems when i was trying to midi map it to my midi controller. if you need your automix capability i would recommend Ableton Live. i personaly use Torq with Exponent rewired into Ableton Live. Ableton Live gives me better control over my vst effects and also has 4 band eqs that i love so much
